Orphée traces a path from darkness into light, drawing on interpretations of the Orpheus myth from Ovid to Cocteau. Themes of death, rebirth and transformation run through music for solo cello, organ, string quartet, string orchestra and a cappella voices. Acoustic instrumentation meets electronics and the eerie transmissions of shortwave ‘numbers stations’, bringing together several strands of the composer’s earlier work in a mysterious meditation on creativity and change.
