John Coltrane's soul-rending, pure first album as a leader, ... saw him accompanied by sidemen including Paul Chambers on double bass and Red Garland (from the Miles Davis Quintet Coltrane had recently been fired from) on piano, as well as Johnnie Splawn on trumpet, baritone saxophone from Sahib Shihab and Albert Heath on drums. This landmark album was recorded on May 31st 1957 by Rudy Van Gelder. Alongside two of Coltrane's compositions, the legendary saxophonist chose a tune from his friend Calvin Massey, 'Bakai', and three jazz standards.
