Recorded between 1961 and 1963 for Impulse!, Impressions documents John Coltrane’s classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. The title track and ‘India’ come from the group’s 1961 Village Vanguard residency, featuring Eric Dolphy and bassist Reggie Workman, stretching into long-form, exploratory performance. These are set alongside studio recordings ‘Up ’Gainst the Wall’ and ‘After the Rain’, the latter with Roy Haynes on drums. Sitting alongside contemporaneous releases like Coltrane and Live at Birdland, the album highlights the group’s range, balancing intensity, lyricism and interplay across both live and studio settings.
