Josh Johnson’s Animative is his third album under his own name and his first for International Anthem/Nonesuch. The composer, producer and saxophonist pushes further into live-processed electro-acoustic jazz, breaking rhythms apart and rebuilding them through electronics, synths and improvisation. Co-produced with Paul Bryan, the album features Meshell Ndegeocello, Macie Stewart, Marquis Hill and Ben Lumsdaine, moving between skeletal soul-jazz, post-bop, electronic minimalism and hazy ambience.
