Kali Malone follows All Life Long with Burning Song, recorded on the Bach Organ at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche, where she became the first musician to perform contemporary works on the instrument. Joined by Lucy Railton on cello and Stephen O’Malley on bowed acoustic guitar, Malone builds on the trio’s collaboration for Does Spring Hide Its Joy. Slowly unfolding chords move between ambiguity, melancholy and radiant upper-register tones, with the pieces favouring an intuitive, direct approach to composition. The closing ‘My Eve My Dawn’ draws sadness and joy together through stately, interconnected passages.
