Khruangbin return to the source, re-recording their debut with a decade of live experience, instinct and playfulness folded into the material. Now titled The Universe Smiles Upon You ii, these sessions take place in the same family barn of guitarist Mark Speer, across the same early-January dates in which the original album was created. Same dirt floor, same cold conditions, same all-live takes — but the songs shift. Some remain close to their outlines, others lean into subtle new phrasing, harmonic turns or rhythmical emphasis informed by years on the road.
The atmosphere of that barn becomes part of the music’s character — creaks, rattles, birds outside the walls — giving each track a renewed sense of space and earned quiet confidence. Rather than revisiting an ‘era’, Khruangbin approach their past selves as collaborators, finding fresh life in familiar shapes. This is not an attempt to correct or upgrade — it’s a portrait of who they are now, in dialogue with who they were then.
