King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard released their debut album 12 Bar Bruise in 2012, following the previous year’s Willoughby’s Beach EP. The record captures the Australian band in their early DIY phase, tearing through fuzzy garage rock, psychedelic riffs and unruly rock ‘n’ roll energy. It’s a rough-edged starting point for a band whose sound would soon head in all manner of strange directions.
