Given the borderline hysteria that followed Little Simz’s breakthrough album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, the British-Nigerian rapper could understandably have gone down the easy route of ‘more of the same, more of the acclaim’; and so it’s to her credit that Simz (AKA Simbiatu Ajikawo) decided to make a delicious left-field turn with 2022 follow-up No Thank you (it’s only now being released on vinyl). Sleek, succinct and utterly propulsive, the album is a brilliant two-fingered salute to conformity, fame, and all the expectations and restrictions that come with it; the joyous feeling of freedom and spontaneity running through No Thank You is evident in the Simz’s flow – which has never sounded more effortless – and the utterly thrilling production, courtesy of regular collaborator Inflo. Awesome.
