Lucy Dacus made an immediate mark with No Burden, a confident debut recorded with guitarist Jacob Blizard and producer Collin Pastore. Her candid lyrics tackle identity, relationships, disappointment and self-worth, backed by chunky guitars and understated arrangements that keep her voice firmly upfront. ‘I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore’ questions the roles people fall into, while ‘Strange Torpedo’ watches a friend stuck in destructive habits. Elsewhere, the stripped-back ‘Trust’ and closing ‘Familiar Place’ show a more vulnerable side. Smart, catchy and emotionally direct, No Burden introduced a songwriter already sounding fully formed.
