Magnolia Electric Co. mark the twentieth anniversary of their first EP Hard To Love A Man with an expanded edition that includes three additional tracks tied directly to these sessions. Two previously unheard remastered demos – ‘31 Seasons in the Minor Leagues’ (originally titled ‘Tonight I’m So Down’) and ‘Lonesome Valley’ – were recorded at Echo Park Studios in Indiana during the same Hard To Love A Man run, while ‘One Thin Dime’ comes from the later Black Ram sessions at Sound Of Music in Richmond.

The EP captures the gritty, blue-collar Americana that placed Magnolia Electric Co. alongside touchstones like Bob Seger and Tom Petty – not as imitation, but through lived experience and relentless touring. The title track, with Jason Molina writing from the view of the person left at home, remains one of his most stark and affecting pieces, supported by Jennie Benford’s harmony, Jason Groth’s guitar and Mike Kapinus’ organ. Albini recorded ‘Hard To Love A Man’ and live favourite ‘Werewolves Of London’ at Electrical Audio; the other material came from a swift home-window with Paul Mahern engineering at Echo Park in Indiana.
