Reality Is Not A Theory documents the first collaboration between Mark Fell and Pat Thomas, recorded live in Sheffield. The recording pairs Fell’s algorithmic electronics with Thomas’s improvised piano — each player maintaining their own pulse and vocabulary rather than seeking tidy convergence.
Fell’s synthetic percussion and micro-temporal edits expand from dry, pointillist hits into ringing tonal clusters and angled rhythmic pressure. Thomas works the piano’s lower strings before exploding into dissonant, high-register flurries; a jump-cut logic that nods to jazz, modernism and electro-acoustic improvisation.
Their refusal to synchronise is the engine — the tension between two distinct processes throwing up strange correspondences and accidental alignments. Sleeve design by Mark Fell and liner notes by Francis Plagne frame the music’s clear conceptual centre, but the recording’s power lies in its physicality: two approaches colliding without smoothing the edges.
