Athens’ singer, pianist, and ambient composer Maroulita de Kol's wonderful new EP, Anásana, mines traditional Hellenic ceremonial cultures, encompassing the mythologies, arts and storytelling of ancestral Greece, all interwoven with contemporary experimental colour. Now Berlin-based, De Kol is a former student of classical voice and piano, and the technique she displays with both on her sublime works of ecstatic ritual is often breathtaking – not least the Debussy-like, crystalline keyboard runs that ebb and flow throughout. This is truly a phenomenal record that will appeal to fans of Dead Can Dance and Joanna Newsom alike.
