Brighton-based psychedelic noise rock duo Memorials — Verity Susman (Electrelane) and Matthew Simms (Wire, Better Corners, It Hugs Back, UUUU) — return with their second album, All Clouds Bring Not Rain. Written, performed, recorded and mixed entirely by the pair, the record captures an ambitious scope achieved through total self-reliance.
Created during an isolated studio retreat in a barn deep in southwestern France, the album balances melodic clarity with an unconventional edge. It feels both familiar and strange, like a rediscovered classic refracted through a singular modern lens — imagine Nico fronting Can under the guidance of David Axelrod and you’re close.
Drawing on folk, dub, post-punk, experimental tape music, 60s soul, garage rock, spiritual jazz and Canterbury prog, the duo pursued specific textures with obsessive care, sourcing instruments across multiple studios to realise their vision. Verity Susman’s unadorned voice anchors the songs, shifting from tender to feral, while Matthew Simms’ inventive production frames those melodies in unexpected forms.
With adventurous arrangements and assured songwriting, All Clouds Bring Not Rain is a confident, compelling statement that deepens Memorials’ distinctive world.
