Mercury Rev’s 1993 album Boces captures the Buffalo band at their most adventurous, throwing psychedelic rock, noise, pop and experimental impulses into the mix. Written collectively, it gave every member room to bring their own ideas to the sessions, helped by the expanded possibilities of a major-label recording budget. The ten-minute opener ‘Meth of a Rockette’s Kick’ sets the tone, launching into an unruly, ambitious record that refuses to settle into one sound. A key early entry in Mercury Rev’s catalogue.
