Midori Hirano was commissioned in 2025 by Kunstencentrum Viernulvier to compose a new score for The Juniper Tree, created for its Videodroom series, where contemporary experimental artists reinterpret classic arthouse films. Originally directed by Nietzchka Keene in 1986 and starring a young Björk in her first acting role, the film offers a feminist reworking of the Brothers Grimm tale, exploring survival, nature and superstition against Iceland's stark landscapes.
Hirano's soundtrack mirrors the film's quiet intensity with minimalist piano pieces, subtle electronics and carefully judged silences. Delicate melodies reflect the bond between sisters Katla and Margit, while soft-edged synthesizers deepen the atmosphere without overwhelming the images.
