As on predecessorBird Ambience, from 2021, the Japanese producer Masayoshi Fujita's new album,Migratory, is inspired by our feathered friends, a theme that the vibraphonist and marimba player began to explore following his return, in 2019, to Japan, after 13 years of living in Berlin, fulfilling his dream of living and composing music in the midst of nature. Resuming his experimentation with the marimba and synthesisers that he first incorporated onBird Ambience, which recalls the avant-minimalism of Midori Takada, Fujita parallels the migratory patterns of birds with his own continent-hopping itinerancy, and there is a wonderful sense of peace suffused into the LP, the sonic subtext being there's no place like home.

Fujita's extensive travels have also connected him with like-minded experimental artists the world over, andMigratorynot only features, on Our Mother's Lights', some incantatory spoken-word fromMoor Mother, but contributions on three tracks, including the sublime album closer Yodaka', from Swedish shō player Mattias HÃ¥llsten, whom Fujita met while at a music residency in Stockholm in 2021. A balm for anyone looking for respite from the stressful grind of the day-to-day,Migratoryfeels invigoratingly hopeful “ and as the always-wise Emily Dickinson wrote: Hope' is the thing with feathers - That perches in the soul - And sings the tune without the words - And never stops - at all.
