Miles Davis’ Rubberband documents a pivotal moment in the trumpeter’s career, recorded shortly after his move from Columbia Records to Warner Bros. in 1985. Working with producers Randy Hall and Zane Giles in Los Angeles, Davis moved away from the sound of his earlier work and embraced funk, soul and contemporary studio production, pointing toward a new phase in his music.
Although the sessions were eventually shelved in favour of Tutu, the recordings remained an intriguing lost chapter in Davis’ catalogue for decades. Completed years later by Hall, Giles and Davis’ nephew Vince Wilburn Jr. — who also played drums on the original sessions — Rubberband finally presents these long-unheard recordings in finished form, revealing another sharp stylistic turn from one of jazz’s most restless innovators.
