Modeselektor return to their roots without nostalgia on Classics Vol. 1, a project that began as a plan to rework material from Hello Mom! and Happy Birthday! before mutating into something far less predictable. Rather than revisiting old tracks outright, Szary and Gernot take fragments, ideas and attitudes from that era and pull them apart, reshaping them into a set of new pieces that feel instinctively familiar yet decisively untethered from the past.
Moments such as ‘Kill Bill Vol. 4’ and ‘Edgar’ act less as revivals than as raw material, repeatedly deconstructed and reassembled until only their essence remains. The process is playful, restless and intentionally imperfect, embracing missteps as part of the creative momentum rather than something to be smoothed away.
