Morphine - B-Sides and Otherwise
For any Morphine fan this reissue of the band’s phenomenal 1997 release – available for the first time ever on vinyl – comprising B-Sides and other rare tracks recorded 1993-1997, is a godsend. Like the very best trailblazing groups, the Cambridge, Massachusetts trio made their reframing of the rock paradigm sound effortless. While jazz and the blues are baked indelibly into the bones of Morphine tracks, the innovative approach to vocals and instrumentation is why they sound like no one else; pretty much eschewing guitars all together, Mark Sandman’s two-string slide bass gives every track a liquid, viscid quality that is augmented by Dan Colley’s guttural baritone sax, and made all the more seedy by Sandman’s laidback crooner-style vocal and beat-inspired lyrics. The aural equivalent of a soft pack rolled into the sleeve of an oil-stained white tee, Morphine are timeless.
