Starting with the glorious, almighty racket of opener ‘Touch Me I’m Sick’, the de facto anthem of the Seattle grunge scene, Mudhoney’s peerless Superfuzz Bigmuff maybe 35 years old, but my sweet lord does it still sound as vital and subversive as ever. Every song on Superfuzz Bigmuff sounds like it was composed and played by a bunch of kids raised feral and alone in a forest, who had the raw nihilistic punk of The Stooges’ eponymous 1969 debut as their only parental surrogate. Flicking two fingers at Freud, the album dispenses with the tiresome business of ego and superego, and instead deals only in pure unadulterated id. As vocalist Mark Arm intones on the aforementioned first track: “Wow, I won't live long / And I'm full of rot / Gonna give you girl / Everything I got / Touch me, I'm sick.” Sublime.
