Recorded with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Outlaster finds Nina Nastasia broadening her spare songwriting with arrangements by Los Angeles composer and instrumentalist Paul Bryan. Bryan adapts Nastasia’s songs for a small orchestra, adding depth and colour while preserving the directness at the core of her work.
The sessions feature drummer Jay Bellerose and Chicago guitarist Jeff Parker alongside a wider ensemble, bringing Bryan’s evocative score to life. Horns, reeds and strings lend the album a sweeping, cinematic quality that recalls the orchestrated jazz sensibilities of figures like Gil Evans.
Though richer in arrangement than Nastasia’s earlier recordings, the album retains her distinctive economy and emotional focus. Long out of print, Outlaster is available on vinyl again after more than a decade.
