Oumou Sangaré's 1991 debut Moussolou announced one of Mali's most distinctive voices. Meaning 'Women' in Bambara, its songs explore love, marriage, independence and women's rights with remarkable honesty, set to the driving rhythms of the Wassoulou tradition and the virtuosic kamalengoni playing of Bénogo Diakité. A huge success across West Africa, the album was later introduced to an international audience by World Circuit, launching Sangaré's global career. More than three decades on, Moussolou remains a powerful and influential classic.
