Released in 1998, OutKast’s third album Aquemini expanded on the sound of ATLiens with live instrumentation and a broader musical palette. Drawing on 1970s funk, Southern soul, gospel, country and psychedelic rock, André 3000 and Big Boi pushed their distinctive Atlanta hip-hop into increasingly adventurous territory. Its wide-ranging production and lyrical scope helped make Aquemini a commercial success, while its reputation has only grown since, earning recognition as one of hip-hop’s most celebrated albums.
