Parquet Courts follow Light Up Gold with Tally All The Things That You Broke, a short, sharp burst of restless creativity. Across five tracks, the band stretch their sound in bold new directions without losing their taut, offbeat edge. Opener ‘You’ve Got Me Wonderin’ Now’ races on melodic drive and toy-instrument hooks, while ‘Descend (The Way)’ channels the nervy jangle of their breakout album. The sprawling ‘The More It Works’ captures their live-wire energy, and ‘Fall On Yr Face’ offers a woozy desert sway to close the day.
The centrepiece, ‘He’s Seein’ Paths’, spins an eight-minute stream-of-consciousness tale of a bike-riding weed courier, set against junkyard beats and found-sound percussion. It’s equal parts post-punk jam, rap narrative and NYC fever dream — linking Parquet Courts’ wiry minimalism to the eccentric pop worlds of Beck or Ween. A vivid snapshot of a band in motion, Tally All The Things That You Broke proves they’re far from out of ideas.
