Pixies’ Bossanova followed the breakthrough success of Doolittle, with the band once again teaming up with producer Gil Norton. Released during a particularly productive period for the group, it arrived alongside Kim Deal’s work with The Breeders, whose debut Pod appeared earlier the same year.
Featuring fan favourites such as ‘Velouria’, ‘Dig For Fire’ and ‘Allison’ – a tribute to jazz and blues pianist Mose Allison – the album sees Pixies move beyond the raw intensity of their earlier work. Surf rock and cosmic influences play a larger role, while Black Francis’ lyrics delve into strange sci-fi imagery and surreal storytelling. The album’s otherworldly themes are reflected in the sleeve artwork by Vaughan Oliver, making Bossanova one of the band's most distinctive releases.
