Emmett Kelly and Graham Lambkin’s Premasters marks Black Truffle’s 150th release with psych-folk assembled through loops, abrupt edits and outdoor recordings. Kelly, of The Cairo Gang and The Hard Quartet, supplies intricate acoustic picking and sputtering electric guitars; former Shadow Ring member Lambkin brings his ear for collage. Layered voices sing surreal lyrics, while ‘When Breezes Blew Smiles’ tangles acoustic guitars with backwards crowd noise, dissonant piano and bursts of applause. Jim White contributes drums to ‘Cosmoses’. Shifting levels and exposed overdubs preserve a homemade, unfinished feel, taking cues from 1970s private-press records.
