Protomartyr's seventh album, Hotel Usona, was recorded with producer Dave Fridmann (Nick Cave, MGMT, The Flaming Lips) at Tarbox Road Studios in western New York. The Detroit post-punk band continue their unflinching examination of modern life, with Joe Casey framing America as a decaying hotel, each song occupying a room haunted by a different social or political anxiety.
The album tackles AI, deportation, nationalism, political extremism, violence and parenthood, while Greg Ahee broadens the band's sound with touches of Middle Eastern music and 1950s exotica. Fridmann's expansive production, alongside horn contributions from his son Jon, gives Hotel Usona a striking sense of scale, making this one of Protomartyr's most ambitious and uncompromising records.
