After myriad albums, the extent to which the eminent experimental musician Richard Youngs is still willing to explore new techniques, instrumentation and creative strategies is extraordinary. Indeed, the Glasgow-based artist’s appetite to, as Ezra Pound put it, ‘make it new’, is such that if you showed him a tantalisingly soft and pillowy mound of laurels, and said, “Hey Richard, after all your years of prolific innovation you surely deserve a rest – come sit for a goodly while and rest your weary self,” he would undoubtedly take one look at said foliage and leg it in the opposite direction, shouting, “No thanks, stuff to do!”

And thank goodness, for Youngs’ indefatigable urge to experiment has yet again produced something sublime, for Modern Sorrow’s elegiac and radically stark take on contemporary pop production once again elicits the response, now familiar to his fans, of “wow, I didn’t know you could that.” It kind of sounds like if DJ Cam remixed Oneohtrix Point Never’s Replica, played the result once for Dean Blunt and, once month later, told him to rerecord it from memory – and then handed it over to Terry Riley and the ghost of Pauline Oliveros to add the finishing touches. It’s really good.
