RÓIS, aka Rose Connolly, brings Irish traditional music into striking new territory on her second album, Mo Léan. Drawing on sean-nós singing, the Irish language, techno, jazz and experimental electronics, Connolly explores caoineadh — the pagan tradition of keening in which women gathered to sing and howl around the dead. Once central to Irish mourning, the practice was suppressed by the Catholic Church and weakened further by the decline of Irish-speaking rural communities. Mo Léan reconnects with these rituals, treating death not simply as loss but as an occasion for music, storytelling and celebration.
