Lindsay Olsen's fifth album under her Salami Rose Joe Louis moniker, Akousmatikous, which roughly translates as Headphones', must be a nod to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras's term akousmatikoi'(listeners'), which the fan of all things triangular gave to his uninitiated' pupils. As the story goes Pythagoras was essentially a pre-Socratic Wizard of Oz, ordering that a sheet should be placed between himself and the akousmatikoi (from which the French composer and musique concrète pioneer Pierre Schaeffer derived the term acousmatique') so that they could fully concentrate on his profound musings. Sounds like an awesome guy.
Any road, while listening to Akousmatikousfrom behind a curtain is not advisable (it just sounds a bit muffled), listening to Olsen's mind-bending jazz-tinged experimental pop album with headphones on certainly is, as it allows us to hear all of the LP's exquisite detail in full. Featuring collaborations with Brijean and Soccer96 (The Comet is Coming's Danalogue x Betamax), among many other formidable artists, the LP essentially marries the bravura avant-electronica production chops of Flying Lotus with the pop hooks of Khruangbin and Toro y Moi, and it's absolutely thrilling.
