Liars - Sisterworld
Released: 21/04/23
The latest in Liars' recycled coloured-vinyl reissue series, Sisterworld, originally released in 2010, is for my money one of the Aussie trio's most accomplished. For as well as featuring generous helpings of the avant-electro-noise that made They Were Wrong, So We Drowned (2004) such a visceral thrill, notably on the awesome Scarecrows on a Killer Slant' (which is the answer to the question, What if Link Wray played guitar in Throbbing Gristle?'), Sisterworldalso offers up more complex fare, such as the beguiling weirdo pop of No Barrier Fun'; Here Comes All the People', which sounds like Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit' performed by Can, with a string arrangement by Glenn Branca; I Still Can See an Outside World', a track that starts off like Syd Barrett's Terrapin' played at half speed, before transmuting into one of the most satisfyingly primitive and filthy riffs I've ever heard; and the sublime, motorik and Neu!-esque Proud Evolution', which is Liars at their most uplifting. Come to think of it, Sisterworld is my favourite Liars album.
