Seminal US 'slowcore' band Low released Songs for a Dead Pilot in 1997: It was their first release on Kranky and went on to become a set of fan-favourite songs. Using an often uncomfortable minimalism, Low used bare-bones dynamics and super slow paces to create a vast space between each emotion, a space which allows each word and chord to resonate in the listener. Included on this vital release are an early version of 'Will the Night,' their deathly anthem 'Land Lord' and stretched out minimal masterpiece 'Hey Chicago.' Absolutely essential.
