Soul Glo - Songs To Yeet At The Sun
Released: 05/04/24
This reissue of Soul Glo's killer 2020 EP Songs to Yeet At the Sun is an indication that the Philadelphia band's stock has risen considerably in the intervening years. Perhaps inevitably, the trio of Pierce Jordan, GG Guerra and TJ Stevenson have invited comparisons with Bad Brains, and certainly the incredible hardcore punk that they make is on a level with that of the legendary Washington DC group, not least in its ferocity, and the myriad points where it seems to fully tip over into thrash metal territory; and like Bad Brains, Soul Glo also make dizzying sonic right-turns. While the former were noted for their stellar brand of dub reggae, however, which offered respite from the next brutal track just around the corner, the latter offer no such let-up in intensity when they change modes on Songs to Yeet At the Sun, instead choosing to continue pummelling the listener with exquisitely brutal trap (2K'), just as they did on their 2022 full-length Diaspora Problems, with Driponomics'. But as much as I enjoy such occasional forays, for me it's all about the phenomenal racket that they make with guitars, for when it comes to contemporary hardcore punk, Soul Glo are the very best there is.
