Xkatedral [of Ideologic Organ]
Stephen O’Malley, co-founder of Sunn O))), presents a stark and focused body of work built around the immense physicality of the pipe organ. The album features two long-form compositions, written and performed by O’Malley alongside acclaimed organist Kali Malone and Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary).
Recorded on the historic organs of Église Saint-François in Lausanne, these pieces form part of Les Sphères (effondrez-les), a larger compositional cycle originally developed for a collaboration with choreographer Cindy Van Acker. Within that broader suite, O’Malley explored different instrumental groupings; here, the pipe organ becomes the sole focus, revealing its weight, resonance, and capacity for sustained intensity.
The music unfolds patiently, emphasising duration, harmonic pressure, and architectural scale. Mixed by O’Malley with collaborators in Stockholm and Paris, and mastered by Rashad Becker in Berlin, the album captures the organ as both a physical structure and a living instrument. This release is a co-production with La Becque Editions, standing as a singular entry in O’Malley’s ongoing investigations into volume, space, and form.
