Originally created in 1987 for a Sanyo air-conditioner campaign, Takashi Kokubo’s Get at the Wave became an enduring work of Japanese environmental music. Synthesizers meet natural field recordings, conjuring open water, cooling breezes and wide spaces far from the bustle of city life. Kokubo was a key figure in kankyō ongaku, while his sound design became part of everyday Japanese life, from mobile phone earthquake alerts to electronic payment tones. Get at the Wave captures his distinctive approach to electronic composition and environmental sound.
