Talking Heads took shape when Chris Frantz and David Byrne met as students at Rhode Island School of Design. Before the band name was set, they played together in a college group called The Artistics, honing ideas that would soon take clearer form.
In the spring of 1974, the group convened in Frantz’s Benefit Street apartment to record a homemade demo on cassette. Rough and immediate, these sessions captured the band at a crucial early moment, already sharpening their distinctive approach to rhythm, tension, and songcraft.
Among the tracks committed to tape were early versions of ‘Warning Sign’ and ‘Psycho Killer’, songs that would later become central to the Talking Heads catalogue. Stripped of studio polish, the recordings offer a direct glimpse of a band finding its voice, with the core elements of their sound already firmly in place
