The Clean followed Boodle Boodle Boodle with 1982’s Great Sounds Great, recorded in a Christchurch house with Doug Hood and Chris Knox. Choosing some of their more eccentric material, the band pushed beyond their earlier sound with more considered arrangements and a restless experimental streak.
The accompanying ‘Getting Older’ single takes things further, attempting a homemade Wall of Sound with viola, trumpet, maracas, drone guitar and backing vocals. Its B-sides get stranger still: ‘Scrap Music’ layers two instrumental performances, while ‘Whatever I Do is Right/Wrong’ drops guitar entirely.
