Formed in 1968 in Fremont, New Hampshire, The Shaggs were sisters Dot, Betty and Helen Wiggin, assembled by their father Austin Wiggin Jr. after a palm reading predicted his daughters would form a popular band. Withdrawn from school and drilled in daily practice, the trio soon entered Fleetwood Recording Studios in Revere, Massachusetts to record their only album, Philosophy Of The World.
Written by Dot Wiggin, the songs present disarmingly direct reflections on family, happiness and everyday life, delivered with a sound that balances charm and discord. Initially pressed in a small run and largely overlooked, the album resurfaced in 1980 when NRBQ reissued it.
Since then, Philosophy Of The World has become one of the most polarising records in pop history, championed by admirers including Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain.
