The Wave Pictures return with Gained/Lost, an album that fuses 60s garage rock, 70s classic rock and 90s American indie through the lens of their long-standing DIY spirit. Across its songs, David Tattersall (guitar, vocals), Franic Rozycki (bass) and Jonny Helm (drums) capture the simple joy of playing together — a chemistry that has made them one of Britain’s most beloved cult bands.
Tattersall’s lyrics move between the everyday and the surreal, offering fragments of memory and dreamlike imagery. His words float over the band’s intricate interplay, finding beauty in the mundane and magic in small moments. The artwork, designed by Tattersall, nods to Robert Frank’s Exile On Main Street sleeve, collaging childhood photos, film posters and footballers into a portrait of the band’s curious, ever-expanding world.
Recorded over seven days at Ranscombe Studios with long-time collaborator Jim Riley, Gained/Lost captures the group live and unfiltered. Tattersall’s guitar work is expressive and sharp — part Jerry Garcia lyricism, part Tom Verlaine edge — a style that prompted Marc Riley to call him “the greatest guitarist of his generation.” Gained/Lost distils everything that makes The Wave Pictures special: craft, humour and unguarded joy.
