The sixth album from perennial 6Music favourites This Is the Kit, the group led by the English, Paris-based Kate Stables, is the sound of a band at complete ease with themselves. If Careful of Your Keepers (brilliantly produced by Super Fury Animals’ Gruff Rhys) were a sofa, it would be the quintessentially English, reassuringly expensive, slightly care-worn dark-tan Chesterfield – but one which has been artfully placed in a Portland loft. For while Stables’ sound has always had the deep roots of Anglican folk music running through it, it feels contemporaneous, and, like her UK brethren Scout Niblett, is Transatlantic in outlook, with the strain of Pacific Northwest alt-rock often creeping into the mix. Lovely stuff.
