One of dub’s defining early statements, Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Upsetters 14 Dub Black Board Jungle first appeared in Jamaica in 1972. Working with King Tubby, Perry transformed Upsetters rhythm tracks through booming bass, stripped-back drums, spring reverb, tape delay and sudden gaps of silence. The mixing desk becomes an instrument in itself, pulling familiar reggae forms apart and rebuilding them as something strange and psychedelic. Its studio techniques helped establish dub as an art form while leaving a lasting mark on post-punk, electronic music, hip-hop and ambient.
