Studio One Funk gathers rare and previously unreleased reggae-funk cuts from the legendary Studio One archives. Drawing on the influence of American soul and funk, the collection moves between original productions and inventive reworkings of classics by Booker T. & The M.G.’s, Isaac Hayes, James Brown and Motown favourites.
Highlights include Jackie Mittoo’s unreleased take on ‘Hang ’Em High’, the Underground Vegetables’ version of ‘Melting Pot’, and Cedric Brooks’ deep instrumental reading of ‘Shaft’. Elsewhere, Alton Ellis reworks ‘It’s A Shame’, while Lee Arab and Lloyd Williams bring sharp Kingston grooves inspired by the J.B.’s and James Brown.
The set also features heavyweight instrumental cuts such as Cedric Brooks’ ‘Idleberg’ and Pablove Black’s melodica-led ‘Sidewalk Doctor’, alongside performances from key Studio One players including Leroy Sibbles, Richard Ace, Vin Gordon and Eric Frater. A strong snapshot of reggae’s long-running dialogue with funk and soul.
