VA / Soul Jazz Records Presents - STUDIO ONE ROOTS
VA / Soul Jazz Records Presents
Studio One Roots is one of the defining releases in Soul Jazz Records’ long-running partnership with Studio One, gathering heavyweight roots reggae, rare cuts and instrumental gems from Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd’s legendary catalogue. Featuring artists including Freddie McGregor, Willie Williams, Cornell Campbell, Alton Ellis and Devon Russell, alongside key Studio One groups such as The Skatalites, Sound Dimension, Brentford All-Stars and New Establishment, the collection traces the spiritual and rhythmic foundations of Jamaican roots music.
Highlights include Alton Ellis’ dreamlike ‘Blackish White’, Count Ossie’s hypnotic take on Booker T. & The MGs’ ‘Meditation’, and Willie Williams’ powerful version of ‘Addis Ababa’. Compiled by Mark Ainley with sleevenotes by Lloyd Bradley, the album remains a cornerstone survey of Studio One’s roots output.
