Various Artists Aman Aman – Greek-Anatolian Laments is issued by MISSISSIPPI RECORDS, presenting intensely expressive vocal performances recorded between 1911–1935, shaped by the hybrid musical culture of the early Mediterranean. These songs carry the weight of migration, conflict, and longing, with singers voicing the plea “aman” — an appeal that holds both sorrow and admiration.

The collection highlights celebrated performers such as Antonis ‘Dalgas’ Diamantidis, Sofrouniou, and Stellakis Perpiniadis, alongside previously unknown musicians whose work has been unearthed through extensive research. Nearly half of the tracks feature female vocalists, central to the Café Aman tradition yet often overlooked in contemporary archival releases.

The recordings reflect the upheavals surrounding the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1923 and the forced migrations between Greece and Turkey, where themes of exile and lost love meet the emotional dexterity of sliding strings and intricate accompaniment. Meticulous restoration by Jordan McLeod underscores the precision and intensity of these performances, with historical notes by Stavros Kourousis and lyric translations by Tony Klein offering further context. Co-released with Olvido Records.
