The popularity of Brazilian music from the 60s, 70s and 80s has experienced a mighty renaissance in the last few years, and while artists such as Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Arthur Verocai, and Joyce have for many become household names, even for die-hard fans and collectors, discovering contemporary Brazilian artists is not always easy. Thankfully, the fantastic new compilation Hidden Waters, courtesy of the legendary Mr. Bongo label, has done all of the gruelling detective work in order to bring us the cream of the exciting new wave of Brazilian artists. 

Focusing solely on Rio de Janeiro, rather than taking on the mammoth task of tackling Brazil as a whole, Hidden Waters presents 20-plus ground-breaking artists selected from Rio's resurgent music scene, covering a wide spectrum of musical genres from the expected (bossa nova, samba, Candomblé, jazz, funk), to the more recherché in the form of sunny psychedelia, dusky synth-pop, and experimental electronics – all providing a thrilling snapshot of the sound of modern, multicultural Rio.
