Made in collaboration with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the debut album by the ensemble led by Goldfrapp's Will Gregory, featuring Portishead's Adrian Utley (who also produced it), impressively lives up to its ambitious aim. Awash with spirals of melody, circular structures, sequences, and patterns inspired by the works of the Greek mathematician Archimedes, Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project is a singular neo-classical electronic record that takes inspiration from Bachian counterpoint, Delia Derbyshire, Cluster and John Barry in equal measure, employing, among other storied analogue synths, Moogs, Korg 700s and Roland JX-3Ps to create an exhilarating work of art in which classical antiquity and retro-futurism collide.
