William Basinski presents his first studio album since 2020’s Lamentations. Passing the Cup of Sorrows takes its inspiration from a past-life regression exercise in which two souls exchange painful experiences as an act of understanding and forgiveness. Basinski translates the idea into a single 40-minute composition for solitary piano and subtle electronics. Drawing on the spare, asymmetrical approach of Morton Feldman, the piece unfolds slowly through fractured piano figures and spectral electronics, moving between unease, contemplation and catharsis.
